Because every day is Earth Day!

We look forward to the day we no longer have to celebrate Earth Day because it will be second nature for us to protect our resources and ensure a safer environment for our kids. There will no longer be talk of switching to cloth diapers or switching off lights when leaving a room or explaining what can and cannot be recycled – it will be part of our daily routine like brushing our teeth and tying our shoelaces. It may be utopian to consider such a future, but that does not stop us from taking those important baby steps towards it. Sustainability is intrinsically about Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose and Recycle. Let’s use today as a reminder that every day is Earth Day!

Where have the seasons gone?

Remember the anticipation as a kid of diving into a juicy slice of watermelon during the summer or taking the first crunchy bite of an apple picked straight from the tree in the fall? How often do you see the same fruits and vegetables year round and cannot help, but wonder how that is possible or how far it has had to travel to be in season somewhere in the world? Mother nature has always had a way of telling us when it was the right moment to enjoy a certain fruit or vegetable. When to plant it, how to nurture it and when to pick it. We love eating seasonably, but the reality of today’s consumer demand makes it very hard to supply fruits and vegetables according to that schedule. Not only, but people do not want to wait for their favorite produce to be in season which is a shame because the anticipation is half the enjoyment.

One great source of seasonal produce is, of course, your local farmer or local CSA. Locally sourced and locally grown organic fruits and vegetables for the most part do not travel as far, do not need to be sprayed with chemicals, are packed with more nutrition and support local economies. We always advocate baby steps and especially in big cities and cities that do not have the climate for multiple local produce harvests or for fruits available only from other countries you will have to hybrid and supplement what you can find locally with what is brought in from farther away and is made available in your local supermarket. The beauty of a local CSA, though, is that you will start to learn the seasonality of your local produce and if you can visit one of the farms nearby it is a great family outing and wonderful learning experience for your kids!

There are many online resources to help you find what is in season in your area and that give you nutritional tips and information on organic produce. Below we list only a few that we think are a great way to start learning what is grown in your local area, but feel free to share your own sources and let us know what you can find and grow locally.

The Great Toothpaste Debate

The number of articles with regard to the negative long-term health effects of fluoride in toothpaste seems to be growing exponentially in recent years and yet no one seems in the least bit alarmed. Is fluoride just the new mass hysteria of the decade?

Reading some of the arguments and statistics against fluoride use in toothpaste should make parents at least curious to do some more research about what goes into their children’s (and their own) mouth and, ultimately, body. Is fluoride the poison that some dentists and doctors are warning us about?

The anti-fluoride camp talks about “fluoride toxicity” which over time can lead to gastrointestinal problems, interferes with bone formation, causes kidney, liver and thyroid problems and the list goes on and on. Most doctors, dentists and researches dismiss such claims and insist that the low dosage of fluoride in toothpaste and in tap water has been only beneficial to our teeth.

Is this something that concerns you or do you think it is an exaggeration? What toothpaste do you use for your families oral hygiene? As always we would love to hear your thoughts and get a healthy discussion going. Awareness allows all of us to learn and make educated decisions for our families and for our children.

Co-Sleeping, According to the City of Milwaukee Health Department

The City of Milwaukee Health Department has launched an aggressive ad campaign highlighting the dangers of co-sleeping. Through their TV, radio & print ads (3 of the ads are pictured above), they suggest that co-sleeping is as dangerous as letting your infant sleep with a butcher knife and is basically a death sentence. Whether or not you believe in co-sleeping, these ads promote fear and shock value. There must be a better way to provide parents with information on how to safely co-sleep.

Formaldehyde in Johnson & Johnson Baby Shampoo

In a step in a positive direction, Johnson & Johnson announced this week that they will be removing formaldehyde from their baby shampoo. This announcement followed the release of an analysis of the company’s “No More Tears” shampoo by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics which found that, after more than 2 years of being asked to remove the cancer-causing chemical, formaldehyde continues to be present in this popular shampoo that lines our drug stores and supermarkets.

Interestingly, formaldehyde has already been removed from the company’s baby shampoo currently sold in Denmark, Finland, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, South Africa, Sweden and the U.K. But Johnson & Johnson did not change the formula for the products sold in the United States, Canada, China, Indonesia or Australia. We wonder why that is and would love to hear your thoughts?
