EBB Teams Up With the Little Wings Foundation To Donate Blankets to Children in New York

The holiday season is upon us and as we all get ready for the festivities, Leif and the EBB Team have been thinking about the importance of giving. So we have teamed up with the Little Wings Foundation, one of many worthy children’s causes, to make your purchases with us spread some goodwill to help make this winter a little more comfortable for all.

How can you help? It’s easy, if you like today’s Eco-Deal – the Mixed Baby Greens and/or Go Natural Baby blankets – just buy one or more and for every blanket you purchase, we will donate another one to the Little Wings Foundation. Don’t need the blanket? Just donate one and we will match your donation. Tomorrow, we will post the number of blankets you have helped donate!

The Little Wings Foundation will distribute these blankets to the Early Head Start program at Episcopal Social Services in New York. This program works with families living in poverty to bring their children to a safe and loving place throughout the year. Just as these children are well cared for by day, the Little Wings Foundation wants to make sure that they have some basic comforts back at home by providing diapers, wipes, layering clothes and blankets - things that many of us take for granted.

Does owning an eco-friendly online site mean we live completely green lifestyles?

Yes, we own an eco-friendly online store, but we do not expect everyone to only purchase green products for their children and families.

Perhaps it was becoming mothers that pushed both of us into trying to maintain a more eco-friendly lifestyle. Maybe it would have happened anyway, as these days it is definitely the trend to be more aware of the ways in we affect our planet and the environment. It was a probably a combination of both.

Regardless of how we arrived at this point, we are now both much more aware of what we bring into our home and especially, what our sons play with, what they eat (and this means food as well as everything else they sink their teeth into), and what clothing and skincare products we put on them.

At the same time though, we are realistic and we have budgets and time constraints. So yes, our children have some plastic toys, they don’t always eat organic food and they definitely have plenty of clothes made of conventional cotton.

However, in an effort to create healthier homes for our children, we have both decided that it was of the utmost importance for the following three areas to be as toxic-free as possible: our children’s sleeping areas, their dining items and their toys.

We believe in the importance of organic bedding, mattresses and sleepwear. When choosing these items, we look for those only made of natural rubber or latex, organic wool, cotton or hemp. No other materials should be listed! We also try to always buy PJs, long johns and blankets that don’t contain flame-retardant chemicals.

In terms of dining items and toys, there are three chemicals we always avoid: phthalates BPA, and PVC or vinyl. (Be on the lookout for a blog post dedicated only to these common toxins).

We recognize that there are many other areas in our homes that could be toxic to our children, but it was in the above three that our efforts were initially focused.

Why Choose Organic Cotton?

Many people think that when they slip on their favorite cotton t-shirt, they are wearing an all-natural fiber. Unfortunately, today that is no longer true. Globally, conventional cotton uses 25% of all insecticides and 10% of all pesticides.

Organic cotton, instead, represents a return to safe and sustainable practices. Organic farmers work with nature instead of fighting it:

• Instead of chemicals, organic farms rely on trees, hedges and open space to provide a habitat for natural predators such as beetles, ladybugs, spiders and birds, which control pests naturally.
• Organic farms have 44% more birds in the fields and more than five times as many wild plants.
• Organic farmers rely on crop rotation to replenish and maintain soil fertility.
• Mechanical cultivation and botanical or biological means are used to control pests and weeds.

A field must be pesticide free for at least three years to be certified organic, and the cotton must be processed according to international organic standards stating that no chemicals can be used and if dyed, only low impact environmental dyes or natural colorants, such as clay, can be used.

What are the benefits of wearing organic cotton, especially for our children?

The primary advantage is the unmatched softness and quality that only organic cotton can provide, and one of the main reasons that people choose organic cotton for their baby’s sensitive skin. Cotton grown conventionally is compromised and weakened by the chemicals used in its growing, processing and dying. As a result, the fibers are broken down, creating a weaker, inferior cotton garment. In contrast, because none of these processes or used in the production of organic cotton, the end result is a softer, stronger, better cotton.

In addition, infants or children with chemical sensitivities, who are unable to wear conventional cotton because they have allergic reactions to the dyes and chemical traces it contains, can wear organic cotton.

What about other natural fibers like bamboo & soy?

Bamboo is an eco-friendly, sustainable crop that grows wild without the aid of fertilizers and pesticides. Bamboo is naturally antibacterial, antifungal and antistatic. Bamboo absorbs water 3-4 times better than cotton, keeping skin comfortable rather than sticky and wet. And, bamboo stays 2-3 degrees warmer in cold weather and 2-3 degrees cooler in hot weather.
Soybean fiber is a soft, light, and smooth protein fiber. It is smoother than cashmere and has the same moisture absorption as cotton but with a better moisture transmission, making it more comfortable on the skin. Surprisingly, it has superior warmth retention that’s comparable to wool. Additionally, it is resistant to and UV rays and unlike many other fabrics, is biodegradable when discarded.

In the end, we believe that choosing organic fibers is not only a great choice for your baby, but an important one for our planet as well.

when we set out to create EcoBabyBuys.com, we had one principle in mind. Our mission was to discover manufacturers that offered non-toxic, eco-friendly and fairly traded products. As urban mothers, we thought a little bit of style wouldn’t hurt either.

Let’s admit it – parenthood is a doorway to chaos. Our lives get thrown upside down in good ways and ways completely out of our control. Practicality and function often take over. Looking good gets relegated to unbreakable and spill-proof. Unfortunately, as many of you know, anti-aesthetic practicality also comes at a much higher price in the form of harmful materials used to make baby products cheap and durable. It takes one brief phone call to our parents to realize that it wasn’t always this way. We can raise our children without the fear of toxic products and that is EcoBabyBuys.com’s mission.

Our goal is also to alleviate any additional stress that comes with being a busy parent. Not everyone finds the time to address the safety record of a manufacturer or knows where to start to look. We take pride in researching our vendors to meet strict criteria so that we may provide the best and safest possible products on the market for our children. In fact, our introductory letter to our partners stated the following:

the use of non-toxic materials and dyes;
the use of organic and/or recycled textiles and materials;
the use of eco-friendly packaging;
and a commitment and adherence to the standards of fair-trade.

We continue to search each day for the top eco-vendors, some of whom are well-established and others who are lesser known (but just as dependable). We also make sure to bring you the most practical and stylish products so that you do not have to go hunting for them.

We do not pretend to be experts on all that is eco-friendly, but we are committed to being as informed as possible in order to deliver what is best for our children.
